Updated May 31, 2025
The documentary A Double Life delves into a world of true crime, betrayal, and the story of a self-sacrificing hero against an all-powerful villain, set against a backdrop of international intrigue. The film centers on Stephen Bingham, George Jackson and the Black Panther Party.
Stephen Bingham, born into Connecticut’s elite, became a lawyer dedicated to helping those in need after participating in the Freedom Summer project. By 29, he was known as a radical lawyer.
George Jackson, growing up in Los Angeles ghettos, was incarcerated in San Quentin at 19. His activism grew during his imprisonment, and by 29, he had authored “Soledad Brother” and founded the Black Panther Family.
J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director at 29, concerned about rising activism, particularly within the Black Panthers, targeted them. He also targeted the National Lawyers Guild, deeming them “more hazardous than the people throwing bombs,” initiating an era of suppressing lawyers challenging racism.
In 1971, the Black panthers requested Stephen Bingham’s legal assistance to escort a visitor to George Jackson at San Quentin. After the visitor was denied access, Bingham met with Jackson alone. Hours later, a deadly incident occured, leaving six dead, including Jackson, who was shot by a sniper in the prison yard. The FBI alleged that Bingham had smuggled in the gun that caused the violence, leading to his indictment on murder charges and his becoming a fugitive.
A Double Life, directed by Catherine Masud, is available on Tubi, Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube Movies.
The film’s subject, Stephen bingham, came from a prominent family. His father, Alfred mitchell Bingham, was an author, attorney, and activist who served in the Connecticut State Senate. His grandfather, Hiram Bingham III, was a governor, U.S.Senator, and the first European to see Machu Picchu since the 16th century.
Bingham’s early activism included marching with Cesar Chavez and the Congress of Racial Equality. He also interned with the United States Congress and the Department of Justice, and worked for Berkeley Neighborhood Legal Services. He also aided inmates in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked on Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign.
What’s next
