Scientists Discover Asteroid 2024 PT5: A Rare “Two Moons” Phenomenon

Spanish astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery, ‌detecting an asteroid that will orbit‍ near⁣ Earth⁣ for 57 days, creating ‍a rare “two moons” ⁤phenomenon.

The asteroid,‍ named‌ 2024 PT5, was ⁤discovered by the Asteroid Collision Warning System (ATLAS) on ‌August 7. With ⁣a diameter of approximately 10 meters, it will be the moon’s companion from September 29 to ‌November 25.

Astronomers have been tracking ‌and studying asteroids, ⁢and this⁤ discovery ⁢presents⁤ a unique opportunity for observation. The asteroid will not hit Earth, as it⁣ is held by the planet’s⁢ gravity, and will instead orbit in a horseshoe circle.

Although the asteroid will pass‌ close to Earth for 57 days, it ⁤is difficult to see due to its small size and dim light. Most telescopes are ⁤unable to capture this celestial body.

Research confirms that Asteroid 2024 PT5 is a natural object, not a man-made one, and is unlikely ‍to be space debris. Its orbit suggests it may have originated from the ⁢Arjuna asteroid belt.

This rare phenomenon presents a great opportunity for astronomers to make observations and ‍gain insights into ‍the⁤ asteroid’s ‍composition and behavior.
