Rainfall in South-Eastern Bangladesh: Cyclone Yagi’s Impact
Rainfall has started in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh due to low pressure over the Bay of Bengal turning into a low pressure and Cyclone Yagi over the South China Sea. The rain began on Thursday and has continued since then.
Omar Farooq, Meteorologist of the Department of Meteorology, stated that the low pressure created in the sea in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a very low pressure, resulting in rain hitting the coastal areas. He added that the rain will continue tomorrow and then decrease, leading to an increase in temperature.
According to the Department of Meteorology, the maximum rainfall of 62 millimeters has been recorded in Cox’s Bazar till noon today. Other areas, such as Qutubdia, Hatia, and Chittagong, have also experienced significant rainfall.
The weather forecast indicates that the clear low pressure located in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh and the neighboring north-eastern Bay of Bengal will intensify into a low pressure, later turning into a deep low pressure. This may lead to further rainfall in the region.
The Meteorological Department has also announced that the storm ‘Yagi’ originating in the South China Sea hit Vietnam on Saturday last week. The after effects of this storm may come close to Bangladesh, resulting in increased rainfall in the Chittagong region from Tuesday.
Bajlur Rashid, a meteorologist from the Meteorological Department, stated that rainfall could increase in the country from Tuesday due to Yagi, with three-four days of rain effect expected.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, water in all of the country’s major rivers is flowing below the flat danger line. However, the water level of Muhri, Feni, and Matamuhuri rivers in Chittagong division is decreasing, while the water level of Halda and Sangu rivers is increasing.
The forecasts for meteorological agencies indicate that the water level in the rivers of the Chittagong region may rise in the next 24 hours, potentially submerging low-lying areas in the district.
Water level of rivers in Dhaka, Barisal, and Khulna divisions is stable. However, a deep depression is located over Jessore and the surrounding areas, and very heavy rain is expected over the coastal and central parts of the country for the next two days, potentially increasing the water level of rivers in these divisions.
