Toray Pan Pacific Open: Aoyama and Hozumi Win Doubles Event
The women’s tennis Toray Pan Pacific Open was held at Tokyo’s Ariake Tennis Forest Park on the 27th, with Shuko Aoyama and Eri Hozumi emerging as the doubles champions.
Aoyama and Hozumi faced a strong challenge from Eina Shibahara and Laura Siegemund (Germany) in the final, but they secured a hard-fought victory, winning the first set 6-4 and the second set 7-6 in straight sets.
In the singles final on the same day, Paris Olympics gold medalist and top seed Zheng Qinwen (China) defeated Sofia Kenin (USA) in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, earning her third title of the season, including the Olympics.
After the match, Zheng Qinwen praised Sofia Kenin, who fought with tape on her right thigh, saying, “I want to congratulate you. It was a great fight. You were taped and played through an injury, so I understand how you feel.”
