Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki Win Silver Medal in Men’s Doubles at Paris Paralympics
The final of the men’s doubles at the wheelchair tennis tournament at the Paris Paralympics took place on September 7th, with the second seed, Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki, losing to the top-seeded pair of A. Hewett (UK) and G. Reid (UK) in straight sets, 2-6, 1-6. Despite not winning the gold medal, they secured the silver medal, marking the first time in two tournaments that a Japanese player stood at the awards ceremony in this event.
Road to the Finals
Oda and Miki had a remarkable journey to the finals, defeating Dong Xunshan (China) and Zhi Zhengshu (China) in the second round, Han Seung Bon (Korea) and Lim Ho Won (Korea) in the quarterfinals, and the fifth-seeded pair D. Caversasti (Spain) and M. de la Puente (Spain) in the semifinals.
Hewett and Reid’s Victory
Meanwhile, the pair of Hewett and Reid advanced to the final by defeating A. Cataldo (Chile) and B. Tapia (Chile) in the second round, the seventh-seeded pair of R. Spaargalen (Netherlands) and M. ter Hoofte (Netherlands) in the quarterfinals, and the fourth-seeded pair of F. Cattaneo (France) and S. Houdet (France) in the semifinals.
Historic Moment
If a Japanese athlete wins the gold medal in this event, it will be the second time in 20 years since the pair Shingo Kunieda and Satoshi Saita won at the Athens Games in 2004. If a British athlete wins it, it will be the first time in history.
