Director Doug Liman is set to helm a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s epic novel, “The Stand,” for Paramount Pictures. This project marks another significant role for Liman, whose recent work includes direct-to-streaming releases.

“The Stand,” first published in 1978, unfolds after a devastating pandemic caused by a weaponized virus known as Captain Trips.Survivors find themselves drawn to either good or evil, embodied by the villainous Randall flagg, a recurring figure in King’s ”Dark Tower” series.
King updated and expanded the novel in 1990, adding over 400 pages to the original text and shifting the timeline from 1980 to 1990. This extended version, titled “The Complete and Uncut Edition,” is King’s longest book.
Previous adaptations of “The stand” include a 1994 ABC miniseries featuring Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald, and a 2020 limited series on Paramount+ starring Alexander Skarsgård. The 2020 version notably altered the novel’s chronology and included a new ending co-written by King and his son, Owen King.
