DP World Morocco UK Europe Maritime Service
Faster, Greener Routes: New Maritime Link to Bring Moroccan Produce to European Tables
European consumers are set to enjoy fresher, more affordable fruits and vegetables thanks to a new maritime service launched by DP World. Beginning in November 2025, the “atlas” service will directly connect key Moroccan agricultural hubs – Agadir and Casablanca – with DP World’s ports at London Gateway in the United Kingdom and Antwerp Gateway in Belgium.
Currently, a significant amount of Moroccan produce reaches the UK and Northern Europe by road, a journey exceeding 3,000 kilometers. This new route offers a compelling alternative, promising to cut export times to the UK by nearly two days. The shift from road to sea isn’t just about speed; it’s a ample win for sustainability. DP World estimates the service will reduce carbon emissions by up to 250 kg of CO2 per ton-kilometer - a remarkable 70% decrease compared to traditional road transport.
The impact extends beyond environmental benefits. The atlas service, utilizing two dedicated ships, is designed to handle up to 150,000 tonnes of fresh produce annually. This dedicated maritime route bypasses the common frustrations of long-haul trucking: traffic congestion, potential vandalism, and border delays. This is particularly crucial for delicate goods like tomatoes and blueberries, wich are easily damaged during extended road transport.
Beyond the UK, the Antwerp gateway connection will facilitate wider distribution of Moroccan produce throughout europe. This integrated logistics solution represents a significant step towards a more efficient and resilient supply chain for fresh agricultural products, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers.
