DP World Tour Drives into the Cloud with AWS
DP World Tour Partners with AWS to Enhance Fan Experience and Sustainability
The DP World Tour and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced a multi-year partnership focused on leveraging cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the fan experience and improve operational efficiency. the collaboration, announced November 12, 2023, aims to deliver data-driven insights, personalized content, and enduring practices across the Tour’s platforms. Sport Industry Biz first reported the news.
Enhanced Fan Experiences Thru AI and Data analytics
A core component of the partnership is the introduction of AI-powered features designed to deepen fan engagement. These include generative AI-driven shot commentary, providing real-time analysis of player performance, and instantaneous language translation on the Tour’s digital channels, making content accessible to a global audience. AWS’s technology will analyze factors like distance, ancient success rates, wind impact, and player performance under pressure, delivering a more comprehensive understanding of each shot.
Spectators will also gain access to a ‘Virtual Twin’ of each golf course, offering an immersive digital experience. This virtual representation will allow fans to explore the course layout and gain a deeper gratitude for the challenges faced by players.
Streamlining Tournament operations and Environmental Sustainability
Beyond fan-facing features, the partnership will focus on improving the logistical complexity of running a DP world Tour event. AWS will power a new intelligence platform to streamline tournament operations, which, according to the DP World Tour, involves creating a “smart city” at each event location, frequently enough in remote areas, and replicating this setup across 26 different countries.
A key initiative is the development of ‘Green Drive Live’,a data platform designed to monitor and optimize the Tour’s environmental impact. This platform will support the Tour’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The platform will track key environmental metrics and provide insights to reduce the Tour’s carbon footprint.
Executive Perspectives
Nina Walsh, Global Leader, Industry Business development for Media, Entertainment, Games, and Sports at AWS, emphasized the complexity of applying AI to golf. ”Building an AI system that understands golf’s nuances is incredibly complex,” Walsh stated. “Imagine following a crucial shot on your mobile device and instantly understanding not just the distance, but the historical success rate, the impact of the wind, or how the player performs under pressure – all narrated in your preferred language. That’s the experience we want to deliver to every golf fan worldwide.”
Michael Cole, Chief Technology Officer at the DP World Tour, highlighted the operational challenges of hosting tournaments globally. “A golf tournament is one of the most complex events to deliver in professional sport,” Cole explained. “Instead of a single stadium, we are building a smart city every week, often in remote locations. That is then replicated in 26 different countries around the world, all with different infrastructure requirements. With our tournament services now hosted in AWS,we will be able to deliver a connected and intelligent course with greater consistency and reliability, wherever we are in the world.”
