Cooking ‍was‍ a ‌long-held interest. ‌Ray recalled‍ taking a cooking​ class‍ in secondary school, a time⁢ when such⁣ classes were⁢ predominantly attended by girls. “I have always liked to cook and I had⁢ registered a cooking class in secondary school,” he⁣ stated. He noted the changing times, as more​ boys began to enroll. Initially,he said,”we made it to⁣ laugh to be with the⁢ girls and eat,” but he quickly⁤ developed a⁤ genuine gratitude for cooking.

By 15,Ray was frequently preparing meals at home,experimenting‌ with cakes,quiches,and blueberry muffins. “Simple things like that, but I always cooked,” he said.

The Spark: A BBQ Competition

Ray’s passion for barbecue ignited in 1982.While⁣ working ‌in road transport, a friend signed them ​up for a barbecue rib cooking competition. “It was in 1982… that I discovered my passion for barbecue as a hobby,” ⁣Ray recalled.

At⁣ 25, with limited barbecue experience, he borrowed ⁢a weber‌ grill⁤ and ventured into⁣ downtown ⁣Chicago. “we⁢ whent to ​the field… with beer ⁣coolers, a grill with fire, and large ‌pieces of meat,” he said.‌ The event, filled with hundreds of⁣ similar groups, resonated with him. “I said to myself,⁣ these are my people because I like to cook, but I ‌also like ⁤to stroll through the park, drink beer and ‌do nothing all ‍day, and⁢ that’s what the BBQ ​was.”

The experience was transformative, sparking a 20-year hobby. In those pre-internet days,⁣ learning about barbecue⁢ required dedication. “You couldn’t just search ​on‍ Google and become an⁤ expert ‌in 20 minutes,” Ray explained. He sought information ⁤through any means possible.

To deepen his knowledge, ray frequently⁣ traveled to Kansas ⁤City, the ⁤closest⁢ city to​ Chicago with a thriving barbecue culture.‍ “Friday at noon, I left work and driven to Kansas City… I participated ⁢in a BBQ competition, I⁣ considered⁤ it or I was going to eat in various ⁢restaurants,” he said. He visited barbecue⁣ company headquarters, immersing‌ himself in⁤ the subject.

From Transport to⁤ BBQ

The transition ⁤from road transport to barbecue was a natural evolution.Ray explained that the transport‌ company was‌ facing‍ challenges.”Possibly, the transport company ⁢has taken its course ‍and was no longer going to be,” he said.
