Dr. Heavenly Kimes Launches Congressional Bid in georgia’s 13th District
The Challenge to Incumbent David Scott
Married to Medicine star Dr. Heavenly Kimes, a cosmetic dentist and television personality, has announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia’s 13th congressional district. She aims to unseat 80-year-old incumbent Rep. David Scott, a Democrat who has served the district since 2007.
Kimes initially launched a campaign for the Georgia State Representative seat in District 93. However, following discussions with community leaders and a broader assessment of the district’s needs, she refocused her efforts on the federal level. “Congressman Scott’s service has been significant, but these are different times than when he was frist elected. We must have a new kind of candidate – one who is ready to fight for healthcare access, economic prospect, education, and justice for every family in GA-13,” Kimes stated in a press release.
A Crowded Democratic Primary
Kimes, 54, joins a field of eleven other Democratic candidates vying for the nomination to represent the majority-Black district. This sets the stage for a potentially competitive primary election, where candidates will need to distinguish themselves on key issues and appeal to a diverse electorate.
The 13th District has a strong Democratic lean, making the primary election the likely deciding factor in November. Recent election data shows a consistent Democratic advantage in the district, with Joe Biden winning by a significant margin in 2020.
| Year | Presidential Election Winner | Margin of Victory (13th District) |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Joe Biden | 68.2% |
| 2016 | hillary Clinton | 66.8% |
| 2012 | Barack Obama | 69.1% |
Kimes’ Platform and Appeal
Kimes is positioning herself as an outsider candidate who can connect with voters disillusioned with conventional politics. She emphasizes her relatability and authenticity, qualities she believes will resonate with constituents. “People are sick of politics as usual,” Kimes told USA TODAY. “They need somebody real, somebody relatable that they can trust in office – somebody that’s not going to leave them once they get in a seat.”
Her campaign platform focuses on key issues such as healthcare access, economic opportunity, education reform, and criminal justice reform. She has also highlighted the need for increased investment in local communities and support for small businesses.
