‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ Plagued by Development Issues, Internal Tensions

The highly anticipated Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a sequel a decade in the making, was met with disappointment upon its release last fall. this followed the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, which won multiple game of the year awards. A recent report sheds light on the troubled development and factors contributing too the game’s underwhelming reception.
According to Bloomberg, BioWare’s initial plans to create The veilguard as a live-service title substantially hampered the development process. Even after shifting back to a single-player format, the team struggled to recapture the depth of storytelling and player choice found in previous installments of the Dragon Age series.
The report also corroborates claims from former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider regarding friction between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect teams at BioWare. this division persisted even when the teams were merged for The Veilguard’s development.
“It always seemed that, when the Mass Effect team made its demands in meetings with EA regarding the resources it needed, it got its way,” Gaider told Bloomberg. “But Dragon Age always had to fight against headwinds.”
The Mass Effect team allegedly criticized the Dragon Age team’s work and excluded their leaders from key meetings, while also being granted more resources and creative freedom.
Following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare implemented staff layoffs and reassigned some developers to other projects within Electronic Arts. A smaller team is currently focused on the next Mass Effect game.
