Toronto police have confirmed that an overnight explosion heard across parts of the city on Thursday was part of a controlled film shoot for a music video involving the rapper Drake.
The incident occurred in the Downsview Park area, where residents reported hearing a loud blast and seeing flashes of light during the evening hours. Police later stated that the explosion was not a threat to public safety and had been authorized as part of a pre-approved production activity.
A spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, Ashley Visser, said in an email that the event was a “controlled incident” and “part of a movie shoot.” She added that authorities had been aware of the planned activity in advance, noting that a public notice had been issued earlier in the week informing residents of the possibility of loud noises, flashes, and brief smoke during the week of April 13.
Global News also reported that police confirmed the explosion was related to a controlled film shoot, though no further details about the production were disclosed at the time. The event drew attention online, with some social media users speculating about a possible connection to Drake, given his frequent use of Toronto locations in his music videos.
While Drake has not publicly commented on the incident, his association with the city’s Bridle Path neighbourhood—where he owns a mansion—has been highlighted in past news coverage. That property was the site of a shooting in May 2024 that injured a security guard, an event that later became part of a defamation lawsuit Drake filed against Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”
The Downsview Park explosion is not connected to that earlier incident, according to official statements. Police emphasized that the April 17 explosion was a planned, supervised activity with no criminal or safety concerns involved.
As of Thursday evening, no injuries or property damage were reported in relation to the explosion. Authorities continue to remind the public that advance notices are issued for such events to minimize alarm, even when the nature of the activity is not fully disclosed in advance.
