Dream Sandman Season 2 Death Explained: Jacob Anderson Role
Will Daniel Hall Ever Cross Over into the New DC Universe? “The Sandman” Showrunner Weighs In
The world of Netflix’s The Sandman has carved out it’s own distinct space, deliberately separate from the interconnected tapestry of the DC Universe. This creative choice has allowed the series to explore its characters and lore with a unique freedom, even leading to fascinating adaptations like Joanna Constantine instead of the more commonly known John Constantine. But as the DC Universe itself undergoes a notable reboot under the stewardship of James Gunn and Peter Safran, a question lingers for fans: could characters from The Sandman, especially the enduring Daniel Hall, ever find a place in this new cinematic landscape?
A Separate Entity, But Open to Possibility
showrunner Neil Gaiman, speaking about the series’ future, has emphasized the intentional separation of The Sandman from the broader DC continuity. “We from the outset, we started Sandman before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over, and we very clearly said we are separate,” Gaiman explained. This decision was pivotal, enabling the show to make creative choices like featuring Joanna Constantine, portrayed by Jenna Coleman, rather than her male counterpart. it allowed the series to “play by our own rules in relationship to the DCU.”
However, this separation doesn’t necessarily mean a complete and utter closure of doors. Gaiman revealed a clever way the DC Universe is acknowledged within The Sandman: he made the character Jed Walker (played by Eddie Karanja) a fan of DC Comics. This subtle nod means “the DC superheroes could show up in that form, like this is a universe informed by DC Comics.”
The Door is Open, But the Decision Lies Elsewhere
While Gaiman himself is enthusiastic about the prospect of crossovers, he makes it clear that any such integration would be a decision made by DC Studios. “If there was a creator, or if James or Peter wanted there to be crossover of some kind, that would be delightful to me,” he stated. “But it would be a decision of theirs rather than a decision of ours.”
This sentiment extends to othre beloved characters from The Sandman. Gaiman expressed his deep affection for Jacob, who plays Daniel Hall, and even designed the end of the current season with a potential Season 3 in mind, hoping to continue watching him in the role. He also mused about the possibility of other characters, like Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s Death, being welcomed into the new DC universe. “We’ve gone out of our way to make ourselves a kind of separate entity, unless, on the DC Studio side, if they wanted to have Kirby Howell-Baptiste come in and be part of their universe, what a thrill that would be.”
For now, The Sandman continues to thrive in its own distinct narrative universe. But the possibility, however dependent on the decisions of DC Studios, remains for fans to dream about seeing Daniel Hall and other Endless members interact with the heroes and villains of the new DC Universe.
