Correggio Exhibition to Highlight Master of Human Emotion in Dresden

Dresden, Germany – , will mark the opening of a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the Italian Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in the Zwinger palace. This marks the first time a complete survey of Correggio’s work will be presented outside of Italy.

The exhibition, titled “Correggio. Movingly Human,” will run through and features exceptional international loans alongside the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister’s unique collection of the artist’s panel paintings. A key element of the show is the presentation of Correggio’s recently restored “Madonna of St. Sebastian.”

Correggio (1489–1534) is celebrated for his innovative use of light, vibrant figures, and reinterpretations of religious and erotic themes. Despite being considered alongside artistic giants like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian, Correggio remains less widely known to the general public.

The exhibition aims to highlight Correggio’s mastery in conveying deep emotion and his ability to imbue the divine with a convincingly human quality. According to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Correggio’s work is characterized by an atmospheric use of light and figures that are “fröhlich-lebhaften” – cheerful and lively.

The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, which oversees the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, is presenting the exhibition as a major highlight for . The show builds upon the gallery’s existing collection and the recent restoration of a significant work, allowing for a broader exploration of the artist’s oeuvre.

Visitors can expect to see works that demonstrate Correggio’s skill in depicting emotion, a quality that set him apart from his contemporaries. The exhibition will explore how he managed to portray the divine with a profound sense of humanity.

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister will be open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and will be closed on Mondays. Admission to the exhibition is priced at 25.00 EUR per person, plus value-added tax. Group tours with VIP guides are available outside of regular opening hours.

Alongside the Correggio exhibition, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and Skulpturensammlung until 1800 are currently featured in the Zwinger, running through . Other exhibitions within the Zwinger complex include the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon and the Porzellansammlung.
