The UFC is making serious moves to bring a Pay-Per-View event to the African continent in 2025, with a key focus on delivering the action at a time that works for UK fans. UFC Chief Operating officer Lawrence Shaw recently revealed the organization’s ambitions, acknowledging the logistical challenges but emphasizing Dana White’s commitment to expanding the sport’s global reach.

Why Africa Now? The UFC’s Expansion Strategy

For years, the UFC has hinted at its desire to tap into the massive, and largely untapped, potential of the African market. The recent success of the UFC’s first event in Manchester, England, demonstrated the appetite for international shows, and crucially, proved the logistical hurdles could be overcome.

“We’ve got a few different countries that we’re targeting,” Shaw stated, signaling a thorough evaluation process is underway. This isn’t simply about planting a flag; it’s about building a enduring presence and fostering a passionate fanbase.Africa represents a notable growth prospect, and the UFC is taking a measured approach to ensure a successful launch.

The Time Zone Challenge & UK Fan Focus

One of the biggest considerations is timing. A PPV event in Africa presents a unique challenge due to the significant time difference with key markets like the United States and the UK. Shaw directly addressed this, acknowledging the potential for a middle-of-the-night event for some viewers.

However, the UFC is prioritizing accessibility for its UK fanbase. “If we’re coming to continental Africa for the first time, do we want to do an event in the middle of the night?” Shaw questioned. The goal is to find a location and schedule that allows UK fans to watch live, or at least at a reasonable hour, mirroring the convenience they enjoy with US-based PPVs. This is especially relevant given the strong and growing UK MMA community.

The ideal scenario would be to host the event in a timezone that aligns with the UK – meaning a start time in the late afternoon or early evening in Africa would translate to a similar time in the UK. this would maximize viewership and engagement from a crucial demographic. UFC 304,held in early May,provides a recent benchmark for a successful UK-friendly PPV schedule.

dana White’s Vision: Growth Over Obstacles

Ultimately, the decision rests with Dana White, and Shaw emphasized his willingness to prioritize fan experience and sport growth even when faced with operational difficulties.

“If Dana wants to do an event for the fans, for the growth of the sport, despite headwinds or challenges operationally – where the event is and what time it’s going to have to be booked – then he’s going to make that decision,” Shaw explained. This signals a strong commitment from the top down to make the African PPV a reality.

What to Expect in 2025

While specific locations remain under wraps, the UFC is aiming to deliver its first African PPV in 2025. “This is definitely a 2025 thing, we don’t want to wait much longer,” Shaw confirmed.

Expect a meticulous planning process, focusing on:

Venue selection: Identifying a suitable arena with the necessary infrastructure.
Logistical Planning: Addressing travel, accommodation, and security for fighters and staff.
Broadcast Capabilities: Ensuring high-quality live broadcasting to a global audience. Local Partnerships: collaborating with local promoters and organizations to build excitement and support.

The UFC’s move into Africa is a bold step, and one that promises to be a landmark moment for the sport. By prioritizing the fan experience and embracing the challenges, the UFC is poised to unlock a new era of growth and excitement in a vibrant and passionate market.
