Runner Seriously Injured in Hit-and-Run; Suspect in Custody

’s-Gravenzande, Netherlands – A 46-year-old man is in custody following a hit-and-run incident that left a 23-year-old woman with serious injuries. The incident occurred on Monday evening, February 16, 2026, on the Nieuwelaan in ’s-Gravenzande, according to multiple Dutch news outlets.

The victim, identified as Lisa, was struck while running. Her father, Jacco van Dam, told Hart van Nederland that she sustained three broken ribs, fractures in her neck vertebrae, a bruised lung, and a wound to her thigh. She is currently stable, but faces a lengthy recovery.

Police responded to reports of the incident after a cyclist discovered Lisa injured on the bike path. Investigators quickly focused on a red Mini Cooper as a vehicle of interest, finding a headlight and part of a headlight ring at the scene, as reported by Rodi.nl.

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, police arrested the 46-year-old man from ’s-Gravenzande. A red Mini Cooper was seized on Wednesday as part of the investigation, though authorities are still working to confirm if it was the vehicle involved in the collision, according to Rijnmond.

The suspect’s detention has been extended for at least two weeks, according to reports from Omroep West and AD.nl. He is suspected of causing an accident resulting in severe bodily harm and of abandoning the victim in a helpless state.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information regarding the incident. They are specifically seeking witnesses who may have observed anything unusual on Nieuwelaan Monday evening, as well as anyone with relevant camera footage, such as dashcam or doorbell recordings. A police spokesperson, as reported by Rijnmond, stated, “We are urging anyone with information to come forward. Even seemingly minor details could be crucial to building a complete picture of what happened.”

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is pursuing charges of causing an accident resulting in severe bodily harm and abandoning the victim in a helpless condition, Omroep West reported. The investigation remains ongoing.

According to NOS, the jogger was seriously injured in the collision, and the driver fled the scene. WOS Nieuws reported that the suspect’s detention has been extended, indicating the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
