A person was hospitalized with moderate injuries after driving their vehicle into a flooded chasm that opened in a rural road south of Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand.

Emergency services responded to the incident on Ngapouri Road in Waiotapu shortly after 10 p.m. On April 7, 2026. The incident occurred following a day of heavy rainfall that had triggered an orange rain warning for the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty regions.

According to Fire and Emergency northern shift manager Colin Underdown, it appeared that floodwaters had washed out a section of the road, creating a hole that the driver then attempted to drive through.

Local residents assisted the driver in exiting the vehicle, though the individual remained trapped on the opposite side of the washout. Firefighters from the Rotorua brigade arrived at the scene around 10 p.m. To help the person cross the road to reach waiting ambulance staff.

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John confirmed the service was called just after 10 p.m. And that the individual was transported to Rotorua Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

Regional Weather and Travel Impacts

The accident took place amid severe weather conditions. MetService had issued an orange heavy rain warning for Rotorua, noting that rivers and streams could rise rapidly, which increased the risk of surface flooding.

Authorities had warned drivers of hazardous conditions and the potential for slips, particularly within rural areas and hill country.

Other infrastructure failures were reported in the region. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) announced that State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge was closed following the discovery of a slip overnight.

Travelers were advised to delay their trips or allow at least three hours of additional travel time to accommodate long detours via State Highway 5 or State Highway 35.
