Drogheda United’s UEFA Conference League Dream Dashed by CAS Ruling
Updated june 16, 2025
Drogheda United’s quest for European glory has been denied. The FAI Cup winners will not participate in the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in lausanne ruled against their appeal today. This decision is a significant blow to the club and its supporters, impacting their financial prospects and European ambitions.
The crux of the matter lies in UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations. Drogheda united, owned by the Trivela Group, secured their Conference League spot by winning last year’s FAI Cup. However, Danish side silkeborg, which also falls under the Trivela umbrella, qualified through their league position. UEFA rules prevent two clubs with the same majority owner from competing in the same European competition.
UEFA guidelines prioritize Silkeborg due to their higher league standing. Consequently, Drogheda United was excluded from the first-round draw, becoming the first club to face such a outcome. The financial implications are considerable, with over €500,000 in prize money at stake for reaching the Conference League.
Drogheda united, a community-driven club, expressed their disappointment. The club said in a statement that thay strongly disagreed with the decision, believing fairness shoudl have prevailed. They added that they accept obligation and are sorry, but will use this as fuel to push for reform so that no other community club finds itself in this position again.
The club also said that they will continue to invest in all areas of the club, including plans for a new stadium. They want to be regulars in Europe.
What’s next
Drogheda United now turns its attention back to the League of Ireland campaign and their FAI Cup title defense, starting in July against Crumlin. Tonight, they face Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
