The Drone Diplomacy Task Force, operating under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed a letter of intent (LOI) with the US-based Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) on May 12, 2026. The agreement is designed to promote international certification and talent exchanges within the uncrewed vehicle sector.

The signing occurred in Detroit, Michigan, during XPONENTIAL, an autonomy and robotics exhibition that ran from May 11 through May 13, 2026. As part of the broader engagement, the Drone Diplomacy Task Force also participated in the US-Taiwan Autonomous Systems Cooperation Forum on May 12, 2026.

Strategic Certification and Supply Chain Resilience

Michael Robbins, CEO of AUVSI, stated that Taiwan is the association’s first choice for expanding its Green Unmanned Aircraft Systems certification. Robbins attributed this decision to Taiwan’s non-red supply chain and its outstanding resilience, speed, scale and leadership in the uncrewed autonomous vehicle (UAV) sector.

Robbins emphasized the geopolitical necessity of these partnerships, noting the need for collaboration among democratic nations.

According to Robbins, Taiwan’s role in the sector is supported by strong manufacturing and research and development capabilities. He further described the region as a key front line in maintaining regional peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific.

Institutional Leadership

The Drone Diplomacy Task Force is led by Chiang Zhen-wei, who also serves as the director of the Department of NGO International Affairs. The task force represents the interests of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating cooperation with allies and partners in the autonomous systems space.

AUVSI is the largest trade association in the world for robotics, autonomous technologies, and uncrewed systems.
