Drug Bust at Tuas Checkpoint: Malaysians Arrested with Heroin & Ice | Singapore News

February 25, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

A Malaysia-registered vehicle attempting to evade border controls led to a high-speed pursuit and a lockdown at Tuas Checkpoint on February 22, 2026, culminating in the arrest of two Malaysian men and the discovery of a significant quantity of illicit drugs. The incident, which unfolded over several hours, prompted close coordination between Singaporean and Malaysian authorities.

According to a statement released by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, officers initially detected the vehicle driving towards the Arrival Motorcycle Zone before executing an unauthorized U-turn. The car then proceeded to drive against the flow of traffic towards Malaysia, creating a dangerous situation for other road users. As the vehicle attempted to return to Malaysia, ICA immediately alerted officials at the Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) checkpoint on the Malaysian side to be on alert.

The vehicle re-entered Tuas Checkpoint at approximately 3:00 PM local time. Responding to the renewed threat, ICA initiated a full lockdown of the checkpoint. The car then reportedly “dashed through one of the lanes and damaged a drop-arm barrier at the Arrival Cargo Zone” before being brought to a halt, ICA stated. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The driver, a 40-year-old Malaysian national, and his passenger, aged 53, were subsequently taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 97 grams of heroin, 69 grams of ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine), three Erimin-5 tablets, and 27 tablets suspected of containing other controlled substances. Drug paraphernalia was also recovered from the driver and a pouch located under the front passenger seat.

Further complicating the situation, ICA officials discovered that the driver was not in possession of valid travel documentation at the time of the arrest. Both men have been handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for further investigation into the drug-related offenses. The driver is also facing separate investigations by ICA for immigration violations and by the Traffic Police for reckless driving and related traffic offenses.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border security agencies in combating cross-border crime and drug trafficking. The Tuas Checkpoint, a major crossing point between Singapore and Malaysia, handles a significant volume of traffic daily, making it a potential target for illicit activities. The swift response by ICA, coupled with the immediate notification of Malaysian authorities at KSAB, demonstrates the importance of close collaboration between the two countries in maintaining border security.

The Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) checkpoint, located in Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia, serves as a key entry and exit point for travelers between the two nations. The ICA’s prompt communication with KSAB underscores the established protocols for information sharing and coordinated responses to security threats. The Malaysian Immigration Department maintains several offices throughout Johor, including locations at Puteri Harbour and Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas, facilitating border management and immigration control.

While the specific motivations behind the attempted evasion remain under investigation, the quantity and nature of the drugs discovered suggest a deliberate attempt to smuggle narcotics into Singapore. The use of reckless driving tactics to evade authorities further indicates a willingness to endanger public safety in pursuit of criminal objectives. The incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by drug trafficking and the need for continued vigilance by law enforcement agencies.

The ICA’s statement did not provide details regarding the potential destination of the drugs or the intended recipients. However, the ongoing investigation by the CNB is expected to shed further light on the broader network involved in this smuggling operation. The authorities are likely to focus on identifying any accomplices and disrupting the supply chain to prevent further illicit activities.

This incident follows a similar pattern of attempted border breaches and drug smuggling operations in the region. The strategic location of Singapore, as a major transportation hub and financial center, makes it an attractive target for criminal organizations seeking to exploit its infrastructure and connectivity. The authorities have consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining robust border security measures to safeguard the country’s interests and protect its citizens.
