Antwerp Drug Gang Torture Case Reveals Brutality and Silence
Antwerp, Belgium – A harrowing case of torture inflicted by a drug gang on a 17-year-old boy has come to light, revealing a brutal world of drug trafficking, violence, and a code of silence enforced through intimidation. The incident, which took place in April 2022 at a barn in Maldegem, East Flanders, involved the savage mutilation of the teenager after he was wrongly suspected of betraying the gang.
The Criminal Court in Ghent recently sentenced the leader of the gang to 13 years in prison for his involvement in the torture. A total of 20 gang members were convicted in the trial, highlighting the scale of the criminal network. The victim, a member of the gang himself, was accused of providing information to a rival group that led to the theft of 340 kg of cocaine and firearms from the barn.
The torture inflicted upon the teenager was exceptionally brutal. His left earlobe was cut off, the tendons in one of his hands were severed, and a piece of one of his toes was removed. Disturbingly, the victim did not make any statement to the police and was not a civil party in the case, underscoring the pervasive fear and intimidation within the drug world. Tattoos on the victim’s back, depicting three owls and the word “omerta,” further illustrate the culture of silence that protects these criminal organizations.
Police were able to identify and apprehend the perpetrators through CCTV footage, house searches, and analysis of mobile phone data. The gang was involved in importing cocaine, which they stored at various locations guarded around the clock. The attack on the 17-year-old followed a violent robbery carried out by a rival gang, prompting the false accusation and subsequent torture.
Four individuals were arrested in November 2022 after police examined CCTV footage from the area surrounding the hospital where the victim was abandoned. Kristof D. Was identified as the likely instigator of the torture, and an international warrant was issued for his arrest.
This case echoes a disturbing trend of violence associated with the drug trade in Belgium. In a separate incident reported in August 2025, an Instagram post detailed a violent assault on a woman in Antwerp for not adhering to strict dress codes. The post, shared by user hilzfuld, described how a group of men surrounded and brutally beat a woman for having uncovered shoulders and arms in hot weather. The post warned that such incidents could become commonplace across Western countries. , the Instagram post garnered 740 likes and 103 comments.
The Antwerp drug gang case also brings to mind the horrific crimes of Marc Dutroux, a Belgian serial killer, serial rapist, and child molester convicted of abducting, torturing, and sexually abusing young girls in the 1980s and 1990s. Dutroux was initially convicted in 1989 and released on parole after three years, only to be arrested again in 1996 for even more heinous crimes. He was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment in 2004. His case, like the recent torture incident, exposed a dark underbelly of violence and depravity within Belgian society.
While the two cases differ in nature – Dutroux’s focused on sexual abuse and murder of children, while the recent case involved gang-related torture – both highlight the potential for extreme violence and the lasting trauma inflicted upon victims. The current case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in combating organized crime and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and brutality.
The sentencing of the gang leader represents a step towards justice for the victim, but the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by drug trafficking and the importance of breaking the code of silence that allows such crimes to flourish. The investigation and prosecution of these cases require significant resources and a commitment to protecting witnesses and victims.
