Drunk and Disorderly: 60-Year-Old Man Arrested for Arson at Anyang Multi-Family Home

(Anyang = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Sol = A man in his 60s who started a fire while drunk in a multi-family house in Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do was arrested by the police.

Anyang Manan Police Station announced on the 29th that it is investigating the urgent arrest of Mr. A, a Chinese national in his 60s, on suspicion of arson of a building in Hyeonju.

Mr. A is accused of starting a fire on the third floor of a four-story multi-family house in Anyang-dong, Manan-gu, Anyang-si, where he lived, at 9:41 p.m. the previous day.

Firefighting authorities who responded to the scene after receiving the report were concerned that there would be significant casualties, so they issued the first stage of response (an alert order mobilizing 31 to 50 equipment from 3 to 7 fire departments) and began extinguishing the fire.

The fire was then completely extinguished at 10:13 p.m., about 20 minutes after the fire broke out.

When the fire broke out, dozens of residents had to evacuate.

There were no casualties, but the house that Mr. A was renting was burned down.

It is reported that Mr. A left the scene after setting fire to the residence.

The police tracked Mr. A’s movements and urgently arrested him on the street in Anyang City at around 11:30 pm on the same day.

Mr. A generally admitted to the arson charge during the police investigation, but was known to have been drunk and rambling.

The police plan to investigate Mr. A in detail, including his motive for the crime.
