What is the MPT30Ka?

Orbit Communication Systems, a prominent provider of communication solutions, recently unveiled the MPT30Ka, a new Multi-Purpose SATCOM (Satellite Communication) Terminal designed for Satcom-On-The-Move (SOTM) applications. This compact terminal is engineered for tactical vehicles and critical mission deployments, offering robust communication capabilities in challenging environments.

What: Multi-Purpose SATCOM Terminal (MPT30Ka SOTM)
Who: Orbit Communication Systems
When: Announced September 2024, demonstrated at DSEI UK 2025
Where: Global deployments, adaptable to land, maritime, and air platforms.
Why it Matters: provides reliable, power-efficient satellite communication, especially in GPS-denied environments.
What’s Next: Continued integration and deployment with military and commercial partners.

Key Specifications and Design Features

Lior Rudminsky, vice President of Products and Solutions at Orbit communication Systems, detailed the MPT30Ka’s specifications at DSEI UK 2025. The terminal boasts a 30 cm dish diameter, constructed from a blend of advanced composite materials, 3D-printed components, metals, and plastics. Orbit also offers a larger variant, the MPT46Ka, featuring a 46 cm diameter dish and operating within the Ka radio band.

Specification MPT30Ka MPT46Ka
Dish Diameter 30 cm 46 cm
Frequency Range (Transmitter) 29.0 – 31.0 GHz 29.0 – 31.0 GHz
Frequency Range (Receiver) 19.2 – 21.2 ghz 19.2 – 21.2 GHz
Radio Band Ka Ka

The system’s transmitter operates between 29.0-31.0 GHz,while its receiver functions within the 19.2-21.2 GHz frequency range. A detailed technical specification sheet is available on the Orbit Communication Systems website.

Enhanced Performance and Power efficiency

orbit attributes the MPT30Ka’s improved performance to a newly developed antenna design. This antenna delivers higher gain while substantially reducing power consumption compared to traditional electrically steerable antennas. This efficiency is crucial for vehicle-mounted and portable applications where power resources are limited. The system is designed to be “modem agnostic,” meaning it can seamlessly integrate with a variety of existing communication systems, thanks to user feedback focused on plug-and-play functionality and roll-on/roll-off capabilities.

The emphasis on power efficiency and modem agnosticism is a smart move by Orbit. Modern military operations increasingly demand lightweight, adaptable communication solutions. Reducing the power draw of SATCOM systems allows for greater operational endurance and reduces logistical burdens.Compatibility with existing modems minimizes integration costs and simplifies deployment.- lis
