QUEZON CITY,Philippines – Teh Philippine government has mobilized a massive relief effort in response too the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island,allocating over $40 million in aid and stockpiles to support affected communities.
The Department of Social Welfare and Advancement (DSWD) announced Saturday that the agency has dedicated significant resources to assist the thousands displaced by the eruption.
“We have allocated P92.2 million in standby funds at the central and regional offices, along with over P1.1 billion in family food packs and more than P891 million in non-food and additional food items,” said DSWD Assistant secretary for Disaster Response Management Group Irene Dumlao.
As of Saturday, the DSWD has already provided over P14.7 million in humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the eruption.
The eruption, which began Monday afternoon, has forced over 10,000 families, or approximately 42,000 individuals, to flee their homes across 25 barangays in regions VI and VII.
Evacuation Centers Overflowing
Over 4,600 families, comprising more than 15,000 peopel, are currently seeking refuge in 28 evacuation centers established in the affected regions. An additional 1,100 families, totaling around 3,900 individuals, are staying with relatives or friends.
The DSWD is working closely with local government units to ensure the smooth delivery of aid and the ongoing monitoring of evacuees.Government Assures Public of Swift Response
President Ferdinand “bongbong” Marcos Jr. reassured the public on Friday that the government is actively managing the situation. He directed the Department of Budget and Management to release disaster funds to support relief efforts.
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Negros Island remain on high alert, ready to respond to any further developments.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level to 3 on Monday, indicating magmatic unrest and the potential for hazardous eruptions. The agency continues to closely monitor the volcano’s activity.
