Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty in the 1996 murder of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, concluding a three-decade legal mystery that gripped the hip-hop world, according to widespread reporting from CNN en Español, BBC, and Telemundo. Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader, was prosecuted for his role in orchestrating the fatal drive-by shooting in Las Vegas that claimed the life of the 25-year-old artist.
The Fatal Las Vegas Drive-By and the Death of a Rap Icon
The case dates back to 1996. Shakur was shot four times while riding in a black BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Suge Knight on the Las Vegas Strip. Knight had stopped the vehicle at a red light near an intersection when a white Cadillac pulled alongside them and gunfire erupted. Shakur died from his injuries six days later on September 13, 1996, while Knight survived the attack.
A Decades-Long Investigation Culminates in a 2023 Arrest
Law enforcement authorities arrested Davis near his Las Vegas home in September 2023, charging him with murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote further or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors maintained throughout the proceedings that Davis did not fire the shots himself, but rather provided the weapon used in the drive-by shooting. Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective who spent years investigating the homicide, noted to the Associated Press following the 2023 arrest that Davis was the last living participant among the direct conspirators.

The trial took place at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas under the supervision of Judge Carli Kierny, utilizing a daily lottery system for courtroom seating alongside a dedicated public overflow room with a live video feed. During court proceedings, prosecutor Marc DiaGiacomo described Davis—identified as a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang—as the on-site commander who ordered Shakur’s death following a casino altercation involving Davis’s nephew.

Shakur, born in East Harlem, New York City, released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991 and went on to sell more than 75 million records worldwide with hits including California Love, All Eyez on Me, Changes, and I Ain’t Mad at Cha. Recognized as one of the most influential rappers in history, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.
