Duane “Keffe D” Davis was sentenced on October 13, 2026, to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. Prosecutors had argued for the maximum penalty, maintaining that the former gang leader deserved to die behind bars, but Judge Carli Kierny handed down the 40-years-to-life term in a Las Vegas courtroom.

Judge Kierny Imposes Sentence Over Shakur Family Grief

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Kierny addressed Davis directly regarding his past statements minimizing his role. For three years, I’ve heard you say some variation of the same thing … ‘Yeah, I was involved in this. But I’m different. I’ve moved on. I got out of Compton. I’m a grandfather now, Kierny said. The judge emphasized the finality of the crime, telling the courtroom, You don’t get to take a man from his family. You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.

The rapper’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, spoke in court about the decades of emotional trauma following her brother’s death at age 25. She described Shakur as a father figure and explained that the grief led to multiple hospitalizations for depression, suicidal ideation, and PTSD. Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo told the court that Davis was guaranteed to die in prison regardless of the exact minimum term, noting that Davis attempted to profit from a killing he committed.

Casino Brawl Triggers 1996 Las Vegas Shooting

The events leading to the murder began on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas, where members of rival street gangs gathered to attend a Mike Tyson boxing match. A physical altercation broke out inside the MGM Grand casino between Shakur’s entourage and Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips and the nephew of Duane Davis. Prosecutor accounts and Davis’s own previous statements established that Davis gathered his nephew and two associates in a white Cadillac to locate Shakur and record executive Marion “Suge” Knight.

When the white Cadillac pulled up alongside the passenger side of the BMW carrying Shakur, a gunman opened fire through the vehicle window. Shakur sustained four gunshot wounds and died in a hospital six days later. While Davis was convicted of masterminding the plot, the identity of the person who pulled the trigger remains legally undetermined, as Anderson died in 1998 without ever being charged in the shooting.

Memoir Confessions Spark Cold Case Breakthrough

For nearly three decades, the killing remained one of hip-hop’s most notable unsolved cases. The investigation shifted in 2023 when police arrested Davis following extensive media appearances and the publication of his 2019 memoir, in which he detailed his involvement in the shooting. Davis felt protected by an older, confidential agreement he had brokered with police in 2008, during which he spoke candidly about the case while investigators were looking into the death of Christopher Wallace.

During the weeks-long trial, prosecutors presented those public statements and book details as a clear confession that voided any prior proffer agreements. Jurors ultimately rejected the defense arguments and convicted Davis of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in August 2026.

Pending Appeal Challenges Conviction Outcome

Following the delivery of the 40-years-to-life sentence, defense representatives stated that Davis intends to appeal his first-degree murder conviction.
