Ryanair faces Scrutiny Over Dominant Market Position adn Airport Car Park Pricing
Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) opted not to appeal a ruling concerning its car park pricing, a decision that could see more spaces become available ahead of the busy summer travel season.
The DAA had initially seen “merit” in appealing a decision related to its car park pricing, which was deemed to have “harmful consequences for consumers.” However, the authority ultimately decided against pursuing an appeal to ensure the car park spaces could be made available to the public sooner, particularly with the peak summer travel period approaching.
CCPC Assists Italian Authorities in Ryanair Investigation
The report also shed light on the significant assistance provided by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to the Italian competition authority. This collaboration was instrumental in an unannounced search of Ryanair’s Dublin headquarters conducted last year.
The search, which took place in March 2024, was part of a broader Italian competition law investigation. The focus of this investigation was to determine whether Ryanair was leveraging its dominant market position to unfairly restrict travel agents from selling Ryanair flights.
Ryanair Denies Allegations of Market Abuse
Ryanair has vehemently denied the claims that it has abused its dominant market position. The airline has maintained its stance against these allegations.
Further complicating matters for the airline, Ryanair lost an appeal in January of this year. This appeal sought to overturn a decision that prevented the airline from suing the Italian competition authority in Ireland concerning the search. The high Court had previously dismissed Ryanair’s case against the Italian Competition and Market Authority (AGCM) in june of the previous year.
Ryanair was contacted for comment regarding these developments.
