MetroLink Project ⁤on⁢ Track, Minister Confirms Amidst Cost Criticisms

Dublin, Ireland -⁣ The much-anticipated MetroLink project is progressing⁤ with a strong focus on delivering on time and within budget, according to the ⁣Minister for transport. Speaking recently,‍ the Minister emphasized the rigorous contractual approach taken to ensure ⁣these critical targets are met, stating, “In preparing the contracts, he said: “I emphasised two things – on time and on budget.”

The⁣ Minister also expressed optimism regarding the project’s planning permission, anticipating it will be granted shortly. This progress is a significant step forward for ⁢the ambitious public transport initiative aimed at enhancing⁣ connectivity across Dublin.

Though, the project has faced criticism, notably from Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary, who has labelled it an “unneeded waste of money” not required for Dublin Airport. The Minister directly addressed these concerns, countering that O’Leary may not have fully considered the project’s economic benefits. “I’m not sure if Michael has looked at the business case for Metro⁢ – that for every euro invested there will be ⁣a return of €4 to the economy and the exchequer,” he stated, highlighting the considerable projected economic uplift.

In other public transport news, the minister confirmed that the extension of free travel for children up to the age of eight will be implemented in either september or october. This initiative aims to ease financial burdens on families and encourage early adoption of public transport.

When questioned about the continuation of the 20% cut in public transport fares, introduced during the cost of living crisis, the Minister offered no firm assurances. This ⁢leaves the future of ⁤the fare reduction uncertain for commuters.

Looking ahead, a ⁣significant technological upgrade is also on the horizon. The Minister anticipates that contactless payment options on ⁢public transport will be rolled out starting from late 2027, promising a more convenient and seamless travel experience for passengers.
