Cork cyclist forced to withdraw from the Grand tour after a crash on stage seven.
Eddie Dunbar’s maiden voyage in the Tour de France has been prematurely ended, with the Irish rider a non-starter for the eighth stage of the prestigious race. The Jayco AlUla cyclist was unable to take to the start line after sustaining injuries in a crash during friday’s seventh stage.
A Promising Debut Halted by Misfortune
Dunbar, one of Ireland’s most exciting talents in the professional peloton, hit the deck hard inside the final six kilometres of stage seven. The incident occurred when a sudden pile-up involving riders ahead of him brought him down.despite remounting and managing to reach the finish line, Dunbar was experiencing notable pain in his left wrist and other areas.
Following the stage, the Corkman underwent medical examinations, but the initial results were inconclusive. His team, Jayco AlUla, opted to wait until Saturday morning to make a definitive decision on his participation.
A team spokesperson confirmed to RTÉ Sport before the riders rolled out of Saint-Méen-le-Grand that Dunbar would not be continuing. “following a crash in the final kilometres of yesterday’s stage, Dunbar has been suffering with pain in his wrist and a decision was taken to stop, for his safety,” the team stated in a media declaration.
Further examinations are planned to ascertain the full extent of his injuries, with the team keen to rule out any fractures. “The initial X-ray didn’t show anything,” the spokesperson added,”but we want to be sure so he’ll have another test.”
A Career Marked by Resilience
Dunbar’s career has unfortunately been punctuated by a share of bad luck. Last year, he was forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia due to a crash, though he showed remarkable resilience by returning for the vuelta a España, where he secured two notable stage victories.
His debut Tour de France had started positively, with Dunbar achieving a strong fourth-place finish on stage six, a performance that highlighted his potential in this demanding Grand Tour.
Fellow Irishman Ben Healy Also Involved
Interestingly, fellow Irishman Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) was also caught up in the same crash that affected dunbar. Healy, who had a stellar day on stage six, winning the stage solo after being in the same breakaway as Dunbar, was relatively unharmed in the incident. He successfully started Saturday’s eighth stage, which is anticipated to conclude with a bunch sprint.

The results will dictate his next steps and inform decisions regarding his racing calendar.A potential return at the Vuelta a España, which commences on August 23rd, could be on the cards if his recovery progresses favourably.
