A 50-person mob beat a foreign national to death in Durban’s central business district on Oct. 22, 2026, amid a wave of anti-immigrant tension, police said. The victim, described by police as a man in his 30s or early 40s whose nationality has not yet been revealed, was standing by the side of a road when the group approached and assaulted him. He was declared dead at the scene.
Durban Protests And Anti-Immigrant Unrest
Months of demonstrations targeting foreign nationals have centered on Durban, where looting and violence broke out following an anti-migrant march held two weeks ago in the city. Protests demanding official intervention against unauthorized African migrants started in June, occasionally turning violent. Governments including Nigeria, Mozambique, and Malawi reported that some of their nationals had perished in xenophobic attacks within South Africa, though South African officials contested certain allegations by maintaining that specific fatalities stemmed from criminal acts.
Economic Pressures And Government Response
To escape the violence, tens of thousands of migrants have departed South Africa over recent months, marking one of the most substantial mass departures in years. Officials also reported that numerous individuals were expelled for lacking proper documentation to stay in the country. South Africa is Africa’s largest economy and migrants have moved to the country for opportunities. But communities in South Africa say there are not enough jobs and public services are overburdened. President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the anti-immigrant violence while conceding that inadequate border management systems enabled undocumented individuals to enter and remain in the nation. Official statistics indicate that roughly 2.4 million foreign nationals reside among South Africa’s population of 62 million.

Police Investigation Into The Durban Attack
Local law enforcement authorities stated that they are still trying to identify suspects in the attack. Police did not reveal the nationality of the man or details of the march.
