Dutch Coalition Deal: D66 Election Fallout & Minority Government

Netherlands Forms ⁢Minority Government After Months of ⁤Negotiations

The netherlands is set too have a minority government led by rob Jetten, leader ​of ⁢the centrist D66 party, after a coalition agreement was reached ‌with⁤ the Christian Democrats and the right-wing VVD on january 27, 2026. This follows ⁤the October⁣ 29, 2025, elections that saw D66 narrowly defeat Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom party (PVV).

The coalition will ⁢hold 66 seats in the 150-seat lower house ⁢of parliament. Both D66 and the PVV won 26 seats in the October‌ election, but seven members of parliament have since left the ⁢PVV.

“We’re incredibly eager to get started,” Jetten, 38, said Tuesday night.”We’re going to do it as a three-party coalition, but we’d also like to work with other parties.” Jetten will become the netherlands’ youngest ever prime minister.

The agreement excludes the PVV,led by Geert Wilders,despite the party’s strong showing in the election. The Guardian reported on the initial election results, highlighting D66’s unexpected success.
