Dutch Government Collapses over Migration Policy⁤ Dispute

⁤ Updated June 3, 2025
⁤ ⁣

The Dutch coalition government has fallen after geert‌ Wilders, leader of the far-right PVV party,‌ pulled his support due to a disagreement ⁣over ‌ migration ‍policy. Wilders ⁣stated that his coalition partners were unwilling to support his proposals to ⁤halt asylum ‌migration, including sending Syrian‌ refugees ‌back to their home country adn closing asylum shelters.

Wilders announced ‍his party’s withdrawal on X, stating, “No signature under our asylum plans. The PVV leaves the coalition.” He informed Prime Minister Dick⁣ Schoof that all PVV ministers would⁢ resign. Schoof has yet to‌ comment.

The collapse of the government throws the ⁤Netherlands into⁤ political uncertainty and will likely lead to new elections within‍ months. ⁣It‌ also jeopardizes a planned increase in defense⁢ spending to meet⁣ NATO targets. The Netherlands is scheduled ⁤to host a NATO summit ‌in ‍The Hague later⁤ this month.

Wilders’ coalition partners expressed dismay. Dilan Yesilgöz, leader of the conservative VVD party, said wilders’ actions‌ made the coalition “look like a fool.” She added, “There is a war⁣ on our continent. Instead of meeting the ⁤challenge, ‌Wilders is showing he is ⁣not willing to take duty.”

Nicolien van vroonhoven, leader ‍of the centrist NSC party, called⁢ the move “unbelievable” and “irresponsible.”

Opposition leader Frans Timmermans ⁤believes new elections are the only viable path forward. ‌”I see⁢ no other way ‍to form a‌ stable government,” he said.

While Wilders’ party won‌ the moast recent election, recent polls indicate a decline in support since⁢ joining ⁢the government. The ⁣PVV⁣ currently polls ⁤around 20%, on par with the Labor/Green coalition.

Wilders, who was convicted of discrimination against Moroccans ⁢in 2016, did ⁣not serve as prime minister or a‌ minister⁤ in the ⁤government. He formed a coalition with three other conservative parties after failing to secure enough support to become prime minister.‌ The cabinet⁢ was led by⁣ Schoof, an⁢ self-reliant and unelected career⁢ bureaucrat.

What’s⁣ next

The ‍remaining parties could‍ theoretically attempt⁢ to govern as a minority government, but this is not expected. The focus now shifts ‌to the upcoming elections and the future of Dutch politics.
