F1 fans Question Value as Dutch Grand Prix Faces Uncertainty, Verstappen Stand Costs Rise
The future of the Dutch Grand prix at Zandvoort is uncertain, and rising costs – notably for dedicated “max Verstappen” grandstand seats – are prompting fans to reconsider attendance, according to reports.Concerns extend beyond Zandvoort, with observations of reduced demand at other races featuring dedicated Verstappen fan areas.
Decline in ”Orange Army” Enthusiasm
According to a report by Speedcafe on August 28, 2024, Jansen, a representative connected to the event, noted a perceived decrease in enthusiasm among the “Orange Army” – the large contingent of Dutch fans who passionately support Max Verstappen – as the Zandvoort race’s future remains unclear. Speedcafe reports that this decrease is visible in fan numbers.
The rising cost of tickets is a significant factor. The Verstappen stands at the Red Bull Ring in Austria did not sell out this year, a situation jansen attributes to price increases.
The Problem with Perpetual Positioning
Beyond price, a recurring issue is the fixed location of dedicated Verstappen grandstands. Fans who purchase these tickets year after year find themselves in the same seats, which aren’t always considered the best viewing spots at each track.
“They get the same spot every year,” Jansen explained to Speedcafe. “If you’re just a general F1 fan, you can go to the main grandstand one year, and then you go to Turn Four, and so on. But the Max stands, people are always in the same spot – and it’s not always the best spot at the track.”
This lack of variety is leading fans to question the value proposition. “So,a lot of people are questioning,’OK,why should I go,three or four years in a row to see the same kind of action?'”
Zandvoort’s Contract and Financial Considerations
The Dutch Grand Prix’s current contract with Formula 1 is set to expire after the 2024 race. Negotiations for a new deal are ongoing, but financial considerations are a major hurdle. Reuters reported in january 2024 that the race is facing significant financial challenges, with rising hosting fees demanded by Formula 1.
The increased costs are putting pressure on the local organizers and potentially impacting the ability to secure a long-term agreement. The financial strain is not unique to Zandvoort; several other races on the F1 calendar are also facing increased hosting fees.
