Duterte Under Investigation: Allegations of Sedition Over Military Remarks on Marcos Governance
Investigation of Duterte’s Comments on Military Intervention
Date: November 27, 2024
The Philippine Department of Justice announced an investigation into former President Rodrigo Duterte regarding his recent comments suggesting military involvement in the government of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres described Duterte’s statements as “bordering on sedition.”
Duterte claimed there is “fractured governance” in the Philippines, stating that the military is the only entity that can correct the current leadership issues. He questioned the military’s support for Marcos, whom he accused of drug addiction. However, Duterte did not explicitly call for a coup.
Official Reactions
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin condemned Duterte’s remarks, accusing him of selfish motives in wanting his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, to succeed Marcos. He emphasized that Duterte’s call undermines the Constitution and the armed forces’ duty.
Andres addressed Duterte’s tendency to dismiss serious comments as jokes, stating that all remarks will be evaluated in context. He also noted the seriousness of Vice President Sara Duterte’s threats against the Marcoses, which raised national security concerns. The National Bureau of Investigation has since issued a subpoena to her for clarification.
This situation reflects ongoing tensions within the Philippine political landscape and illustrates the potential implications of Duterte’s controversial remarks.
