Updated June 12, 2025
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is sharing details about a series of health scares that prompted a meaningful shift in his approach to wellness. In an appearance on “The dr.Mark Hyman Show,” Johnson described how both a digestive issue and a cardiovascular concern led him to seek multiple opinions and embrace advanced diagnostics.
Johnson said his digestive problems arose during a particularly demanding period. “I got this gut issue,” Johnson explained, adding that despite seeing doctors, he couldn’t pinpoint the cause. After consulting with Hyman, specific tests identified the problem, which was resolved within weeks. This experience underscored the importance of accurate diagnosis in addressing health issues.
More urgently, Johnson also faced a heart-related scare after routine cardiovascular testing suggested potential plaque buildup in a coronary artery. Initial scans indicated a possible need for immediate medication.
Everything looked great. Thank God. Knock on wood. And then there was what looked to be… some stuff inside, like a build up of, like what they thought was plaque… in the circumflex… artery, right? And when we looked at that on the old school customary MRI, and the scans, it looked like I had build up, and then immediately the call to action was ‘all right, well, let’s get you on this medication.
Hesitant to start medication, Johnson sought a second opinion from Hyman, who recommended a more advanced AI scan. The results revealed that the initial concern was merely an anatomical variation, not plaque buildup.Johnson was advised to return for another checkup in three years, avoiding unnecessary medication and anxiety. This highlights the value of seeking expert advice and utilizing cutting-edge technology in healthcare.
Reflecting on his experience, Johnson emphasized the importance of proactive health checks, particularly for men. He urged people not to let fear or pride prevent them from seeking medical attention. Johnson connected his commitment to preventative health care to his family history, noting that his grandfather, Peter Maivia, died at a young age after avoiding treatment for cancer-related pain. Now a father himself, Johnson views his personal health as a responsibility, stressing the importance of proper testing and avoiding misinformation for cardiovascular health.
