A stark warning has been issued by health officials as cases of a dangerous gut bug,Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), continue to rise across the UK. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging the public to be vigilant adn adopt crucial hygiene practices to prevent infection, as the bacteria can led to severe illness, including kidney failure.
understanding the Threat: What is STEC?
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is a type of E. coli bacteria that produces a harmful toxin. While many strains of E. coli are harmless and live in our intestines, STEC can cause severe illness in humans. The bacteria are commonly found in the gut of cattle, sheep, and goats, and can contaminate meat, milk, and produce.
Symptoms to Watch For
The symptoms of STEC infection can vary but frequently enough include:
Mild to bloody diarrhoea
Stomach cramps
Vomiting
Dehydration
Dr. Gauri Godbole, the UKHSA’s deputy director of gastrointestinal infections and food safety, highlighted the gradual increase in STEC cases as 2022. “While this rise is partly due to one foodborne outbreak, we have been seeing STEC cases gradually increase since 2022 and therefore its vital for people to take steps to prevent infection,” she stated.
Preventing Infection: Essential Hygiene Practices
The good news is that simple, everyday hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of contracting STEC. Health experts are emphasizing the importance of handwashing and thorough cleaning.
Handwashing: Your Frist Line of defense
“If you have any STEC symptoms, like mild to bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and dehydration, wash your hands with soap and warm water and use bleach-based products to clean surfaces,” advised Dr. Godbole. She also stressed the importance of hand hygiene for children, particularly after outdoor play and visits to pet farms. “It is important for parents to make sure that young children wash their hands with soap and hot water and dry them thoroughly before eating where possible, especially after playing outdoors and visiting pet farms.”
Food Safety: the 4 Cs
Natasha Smith, director of food policy at the Food Standards Agency, echoed these sentiments, urging people to adopt robust food safety measures. “When preparing food at home, people can reduce their risk of food poisoning by following good hygiene practices and by following advice on the 4Cs of food hygiene: chilling, cleaning, cooking and avoiding cross-contamination,” she said.
Chilling: Ensure food is stored at the correct temperature to prevent bacterial growth.
Cleaning: wash hands, surfaces, and utensils thoroughly, especially after handling raw meat.
Cooking: Cook food to the appropriate internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria.
Cross-Contamination: Prevent the spread of bacteria from raw to cooked foods by using separate chopping boards and utensils.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While most people recover from STEC infection within a week, in rare cases, it can lead to serious complications.
“Rarely, STEC can progress to cause kidney failure and life-threatening illness, particularly in young children and elderly,” warned Dr. Godbole. “Please consult your GP or healthcare professional if you have blood in your stools or severe dehydration and continue to hydrate yourself.”
Travel Hygiene
For those planning international travel, maintaining routine hygiene practices is crucial.”If you are travelling abroad, it’s important to remember routine hygiene practises to reduce your chances of becoming unwell,” Dr. Godbole added.
by staying informed and practicing diligent hygiene,we can all play a part in protecting ourselves and our communities from this perhaps serious gut bug.
