Online Shopping Transactions Exceed 120 Trillion Won in First Half of 2024

According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, online shopping transactions in the first half of 2024 reached a record high of 120.4 trillion won, marking a 9.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

This growth represents a 64% increase since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, highlighting the significant shift towards online shopping in recent years.

Breaking down the transaction amounts, goods accounted for 85.2 trillion won, making up 70.8% of the total, while services accounted for 35.2 trillion won.

Food service transactions, which account for the largest proportion of service transactions, reached 13.6 trillion won, showing a 6.8% increase from the first half of last year.

Notably, e-coupon service transactions experienced remarkable growth, increasing by 20.1% from 4.6 trillion won in the first half of last year to 5.5 trillion won in the first half of this year.

Koo Jin-kyung, head of the Service Future Strategy Office at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, attributed the growth in the service market to the shift towards online platforms for purchasing new service products.
