E-Scooter Fire Leaves Woman with Severe Burns, Family Traumatized
Loughlinstown, Ireland – A routine morning turned into a terrifying ordeal for the Cameron family when an e-scooter spontaneously combusted in their Loughlinstown apartment, leaving Lorraine Cameron with severe burns and her family shaken.
On November 21st, the family was preparing for a funeral when they were jolted awake by a loud bang. “We just heard her scream,’There’s a fire. There’s a fire. Get out,'” Lainey Cameron, Lorraine’s daughter, recalled.
Rushing to her mother’s room, Lainey found her engulfed in flames. “You could see her socks were all singed and smoking, her dressing gown was burnt, her hair was singed and you could see that she was very red,” Lainey described.
Acting quickly, Lainey ushered her brother and 18-month-old daughter to safety before returning for her mother.”I went back to my mum, and that’s when I saw the extent of the burns, and I knew she needed an ambulance,” she said.
The fire, which Lainey believes originated from her mother’s e-scooter, rapidly consumed the bedroom.”Her whole room was engulfed in flames; the window was blowing out,” she said. “You could see the flames were all up on the ceiling. All the floorboards were burned, all the walls, the electrics all gone.”
The e-scooter, purchased from a reputable dealer in Dublin about 18 months ago, was not charging at the time of the incident. “My mum has said that she was sitting on the end of her bed and next thing you know, the scooter just started smoking,” Lainey explained. “When she saw the smoke, she said she just left. She knew to leave. As she got to her door, it started sparking, and then just blew up.”
Lorraine suffered severe burns and was rushed to the hospital. Lainey believes the incident could have been fatal had it occurred at night.”If this situation happened at night, I don’t think she would have got out,” she said.
The Cameron family is now speaking out to raise awareness about the potential dangers of e-scooters. “Never in a million years, would we think something like this would happen,” Lainey said. While Dublin Fire Brigade has responded to a number of e-scooter fires, they say the number of incidents remains relatively small considering the increasing popularity of these devices. “As we’ve seen the amount of e-scooters increase year-on-year, we have attended a number of fires where witnesses have said that the initial source of ignition has been an e-scooter, and some of these have been on charge and some have not been on charge,” said Dublin Fire Brigade Station Officer Darren O’Connor.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of e-scooter safety and the need for continued vigilance and awareness.
E-Scooter fire Leaves Woman with Severe burns, Family Searching for New Home
dublin, ireland - A Dublin woman is facing a long road to recovery after suffering severe burns in a fire allegedly caused by an e-scooter. Lorraine Cameron, 54, spent 13 days on a ventilator and is currently in the burns ward at St.James’s Hospital.
The incident has highlighted growing concerns about the safety of e-scooters, particularly the risk of battery fires. Dublin Fire Brigade Station Officer, Mr. O’Connor, described such incidents as “low probability, high impact events.”
“If we take the amount of e-scooters in use today, we’ve seen a relatively small amount of incidents involving e-scooters,” Mr. O’Connor said. “Though, when these e-scooters do take hold, they develop very, very rapidly and intensely, and this has led to personal injury.”
He urged e-scooter users to have their devices serviced if they notice any performance changes, overheating,or differences in charging time. He also advised storing and charging e-scooters outside whenever possible.
Lorraine’s daughter, Ms. Cameron, spoke about the devastating impact of the fire. “They say that she’s going to make a full recovery. She’s got her sight, she’s going to talk again, and she’s going to walk again,” she said.”But,it’s going to be extensive physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and just all round work for her to get back to where she needs to be.”
Ms. Cameron explained the extent of her mother’s injuries: “She has third degree burns from her knees down on both legs. She has third degree burns on her left palm all the way up to her elbow on her forearm. She has some burns to her stomach, her hips, lower back, and then her face was burnt.”
Adding to the family’s hardship, the apartment they were renting is now uninhabitable due to fire damage. Ms. Cameron is currently staying with relatives, but space is limited with six adults, two children, and two dogs sharing the house.
“My goal now is just to find us an apartment where we can all be together, back as a family,” Ms.Cameron said. “Me and my brother can definitely help her with her journey and getting back to what she was before.”
The search for a new home is proving challenging, leaving the family facing an uncertain future as Lorraine begins her long recovery.
