Dublin, Ireland – July 21, 2025 – As the summer of 2025 unfolds, a important investment of nearly €6 million is set to transform the landscape of Ireland’s midlands, heralding a new chapter for outdoor recreation, sustainable tourism, and community development. Fáilte Ireland has announced a €5.7 million allocation to BnM (formerly Bord na Móna) for the construction of two new walking and cycling trails in counties Longford and Westmeath.This initiative, co-funded by the Irish Government and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund, marks a pivotal moment in the region’s economic and social revitalization.
The Midlands Trails Network: A Vision for Sustainable Growth
The newly announced trails are the inaugural projects under the aspiring Midlands trails Network (MTN). This strategic scheme is designed to position the midlands as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, fostering job creation in ancillary services and strengthening connections between the burgeoning trail network and local towns and villages.

Once fully realized, the MTN has the potential to deliver up to 70km of interconnected trails, subject to planning approvals.These routes are meticulously planned to integrate with existing national and regional greenways, and also local community pathways. This integration promises to unlock enhanced opportunities for outdoor recreation, encourage greater community engagement, and drive significant tourism growth across the region.
The commitment to developing this network extends beyond the initial two trails. An additional four trail sections within the EU Just Transition Fund territory are currently navigating the planning process, underscoring a sustained commitment to the region’s transformation.

The official launch of the construction phase was officiated by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke TD. speaking at the event, Minister Burke emphasized the profound and lasting impact these trails will have on the midlands.”The development of these trails will have a positive and lasting impact on the midlands,” stated Minister Burke. “They will not only enhance the region’s appeal for outdoor recreation and tourism but also deliver real economic benefits for local businesses and communities.”
He further highlighted the meaning of this undertaking: “this is a significant milestone in our journey to revitalise the midlands through sustainable tourism and placemaking, and I am delighted to mark the construction of these trails in Westmeath and Longford.”
