EA Reassures on Marvel Partnership After ‘Black Panther’ Game Cancellation
Updated May 30, 2025
Electronic Arts (EA) has affirmed its commitment too its long-term collaboration with Marvel Entertainment, despite
the recent cancellation of its Black Panther game and the closure of the studio working on it. The move, which
coincided with additional layoffs at the company, had raised concerns about the future of the partnership.
EA Entertainment President Laura Miele addressed employees in an email, stating the decision to halt development
on the Black panther project would allow the company to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the
most meaningful growth opportunities.”
Miele also confirmed that the Iron Man game, currently in development at EA Motive, remains unaffected. The
cancellation of the Black Panther game occurred as EA continues its planned reduction in “future licensed IP,”
leading some to speculate about the fate of the previously announced three-game deal with Marvel.
An EA spokesperson told IGN that the “multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA… remains
strong.” The spokesperson added that development of console and PC titles, starting with Marvel’s Iron Man, is
being led by Motive Studios. The future of Marvel games at EA appears secure, despite the recent setback.
The Black Panther cancellation and subsequent job cuts follow a series of similar actions by EA this year. In
April, the company laid off more than 300 employees, impacting Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Apex
Legends and Star Wars Jedi. EA also canceled several projects in development, reportedly including a new Titanfall
game, as part of a strategic realignment. Additional layoffs were confirmed last month after EA ended its
licensing partnership with the WRC.
What’s next
While EA navigates these changes, Skydance Games’ Black Panther project, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, remains in
development, though its release has been delayed until next year. The future of EA’s Marvel games, including the
Iron Man title, remains a key focus for the company.
