Mitchell, DeJean Poised to Lead Eagles’ Secondary

Philadelphia Eagles cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are adapting to increased responsibilities as they head into their second season.Despite the rising attention, both players remain grounded.
DeJean noted the changes happening around him but affirmed his commitment to staying true to himself. Mitchell echoed this sentiment, focusing on mastering both sides of the field with guidance from the coaching staff and film study.
The Eagles’ 2024 draft picks are expected to be key contributors to the teamS pass defense. Last season, the Eagles dramatically improved their pass defense, moving from 31st to first in the NFL in pass yards allowed per game. This improvement represents the largest year-over-year change as 2012-2013.
Mitchell started promptly at outside cornerback, while DeJean settled into the slot role by Week 6 after recovering from injury. Their performance significantly boosted the Eagles’ defense.
During OTAs,Mitchell has been seen practicing at left cornerback,a shift from his right-side position last year. He said he’s working on both sides to improve his versatility. DeJean has been lining up at outside cornerback in base defense and moving to the slot in nickel formations. Adoree Jackson and Kelee Ringo are also in the mix at outside cornerback.
DeJean is anticipated to play a significant role in 2025. Last season, he recorded more interceptions than pass touchdowns allowed. “I’ve just been trying to focus on getting better at the positions that they’ve put me in here, starting with the nickel position,” DeJean said. “I’m now getting to play a little bit on the outside. I’m trying to learn that position as well.”
With Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers, and James Bradberry no longer in the cornerback room, Mitchell and DeJean are now the leaders of the Eagles’ cornerback unit. The Eagles are banking on the young cornerbacks to take on more responsibility this season.
“I don’t think, whether I’ve become more popular in the city or whatever, I don’t think that’s changed who I am as a person,” dejean said. “I’m still continuing to work, and to try and be the best I can be at my job. … I don’t think it’s changed me as a person at all.”
