A study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) found that two specific eating habits—extending the overnight fasting period and eating breakfast early—are linked to lower weight over time.
The findings suggest that aligning meal times with the body’s internal clock may help individuals stay lean. While intermittent fasting often involves skipping breakfast, this study found that such a practice did not provide the same weight-maintenance advantages and could potentially be associated with other unhealthy habits.
Long-Term Tracking of Meal Timing
The research was based on data from the GCAT | Genomes for Life cohort, which is led by the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP). The study initially tracked more than 7,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 65.
In 2018, participants provided detailed information via questionnaires regarding their height, weight, socioeconomic background, lifestyle habits and the timing of their meals. Five years later, in 2023, more than 3,000 of those individuals returned for follow-up assessments.
By recording updated measurements and new survey data, researchers were able to identify patterns between early-day eating habits and BMI changes over the five-year interval. The results were published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
The Influence of Circadian Rhythms
Scientists believe the link between early eating and lower BMI is rooted in the body’s natural rhythms. The human body operates on a 24-hour internal clock known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates metabolic processes and the sleep-wake cycle.
Eating in harmony with this rhythm allows the body to process food more efficiently and burn energy more effectively. When meal timing is out of sync—such as eating late at night—it can disrupt these rhythms, which may increase the risk of metabolic diseases and lead to weight gain.
The ISGlobal study specifically highlighted that extending the overnight fast and starting the day with an early breakfast aligns better with these internal biological clocks, contributing to a lower BMI years later.
Breakfast and Intermittent Fasting
The research offers a distinction between a long overnight fast followed by an early breakfast and the practice of skipping breakfast entirely as part of intermittent fasting. The study found that skipping the first meal of the day did not offer the same weight-loss advantages as eating early.
