Early Flu Season Warning: UK and Japan See Rising cases
Public health experts in England are warning that the flu season may arrive earlier than usual this year. Authorities urge eligible individuals to get vaccinated as cases begin to rise, particularly among younger adults and schoolchildren.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the increase in flu levels is currently driven by cases among younger adults and schoolchildren. This mirrors a situation seen during the early flu season of 2022-23.
Japan’s health authorities have already declared an influenza epidemic, reporting a higher than usual number of infections for this time of year.
While current flu levels in England remain within typical seasonal ranges, the UKHSA report indicates a concerning trend.Professor Adam Finn of the University of Bristol notes, “It looks like flu cases are going up early this year. Seasonal epidemics often get going in children first and then spread through the adult population.”
Data from the latest UKHSA report (covering 6-12 october) shows:
| Metric | Week 41 (Oct 6-12) | Week 40 (sept 29 – Oct 5) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Influenza-like-illness consultations (per 100,000) | 5.4 | 4.2 | +28.6% |
| Influenza Hospitalisations (per 100,000) | 1.27 | 0.73 | +73.9% |
