Virginia marked the start of statewide early in-person voting on Friday. Voters in a handful of other states, including Idaho, Minnesota, and South Dakota, can cast absentee ballots in person—typically at local election offices or voting centers—with more expansive early voting schedules slated to roll out in those and other states in the coming weeks, according to the Associated Press.
At a voting location in Fairfax, Virginia, 18-year-old college student Sanya Singhal arrived well before the site opened to get in line.

Singhal added that she really wanted to participate in her democracy. As noted by the Associated Press, a poll worker sounded a bell as the doors unlocked at a suburban Richmond voting site, allowing roughly a dozen waiting voters to step inside. Stephen Gura, who was among the first voters there, said the election is critical for stopping the Trump agenda and electing candidates who will stand up for people in the district. As noted by the Associated Press, Democratic Senator Mark Warner and Shannon Taylor, the Democratic candidate challenging Republican incumbent Rob Wittman in the 1st Congressional District. William Curry, a 74-year-old retiree and libertarian-leaning independent conservative voting at the suburban Richmond center, cast his ballot for Warner’s Republican challenger, Bert Mizusawa, and for Wittman. Curry said he generally approves of the job Trump has done, apart from the ongoing war in Iran, which he described as a mess the president cannot get rid of, according to the Associated Press. Meanwhile, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 67-year-old Bill Goehring voted early at the county office on a rainy day because he will be traveling later, casting his ballot for a mix of Democrats and independents while stating that Trump’s dictatorial tendencies are bad for America, according to the Associated Press.
Stakes and Redistricting Preceding the November 3 Election
The November 3 election includes votes for governor and state legislature in most states, and will decide whether Republicans maintain control of the U.S. House and Senate. Per the Associated Press, should Democrats recapture Congress, the final two years of Trump’s term would see a shifted direction, very likely resulting in oversight measures and investigations.
The start of early voting coincides with deep angst among many Americans regarding rising gas and grocery prices, the war in Iran, the looming risks of artificial intelligence, and Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement campaign, according to the Associated Press. As reported by the Associated Press, the elections also follow an unprecedented round of mid-decade U.S. House redistricting that started when Trump pushed the Republican-led Texas legislature to redraw its congressional map to aid the party, a move subsequently mirrored by California and other states. Research shows that 1 in 10 Americans this fall is a resident of a different congressional district than in 2024. Those partisan efforts are expected to continue before the 2028 elections following a landmark ruling this year from the U.S. Supreme Court that weakened the federal Voting Rights Act’s protections against racially discriminatory redistricting, according to the Associated Press.
