NVIDIA has announced new advancements in its Earth-2 climate digital twin platform, showcasing how its AI-powered simulation tools are being applied across diverse environmental challenges—from rainforest conservation to industrial recycling—demonstrating a growing role for artificial intelligence in planetary resilience efforts.

The Earth-2 platform, introduced as part of NVIDIA’s broader initiative to combat climate-related economic losses, provides high-resolution, AI-accelerated weather and climate simulations at unprecedented scale. By leveraging generative AI models such as CorrDiff and FourCastNet3, the system enables rapid forecasting and visualization of atmospheric conditions, reducing computational demands while increasing prediction speed and accuracy.

According to NVIDIA, Earth-2’s CorrDiff model generates images with 12.5 times higher resolution than traditional numerical models, operates up to 1,000 times faster, and achieves 3,000 times greater energy efficiency. These capabilities allow users to correct inaccuracies in coarse forecasts and synthesize critical metrics for decision-making in near real time—transforming what once took minutes or hours into outputs delivered in seconds.

The platform integrates data from satellites, radar, and ground-based weather stations to produce continuous, high-fidelity estimates of global and local atmospheric conditions. This foundation supports applications ranging from typhoon tracking and turbulence modeling to renewable energy forecasting and urban climate planning.

Early adopters of Earth-2’s cloud APIs include The Weather Company and the Central Weather Administration of Taiwan, both of which are using the technology to accelerate the creation of interactive, high-resolution simulations. When combined with proprietary data from organizations in the $20 billion climate tech sector, Earth-2 enables faster delivery of warnings and updated forecasts, improving preparedness for extreme weather events.

Beyond meteorological forecasting, NVIDIA highlights five specific applications where Earth-2 AI is contributing to environmental protection. These include monitoring deforestation and biodiversity loss in rainforests, optimizing renewable energy grid performance through improved photovoltaic and wind predictions, enhancing industrial recycling processes via predictive modeling of material flows, supporting sustainable agriculture with precision irrigation forecasts, and aiding urban planners in mitigating heat island effects through microclimate simulation.

Energy companies, in particular, are relying on Earth-2 to improve grid reliability and increase the accuracy of solar power generation forecasts. By reducing uncertainty in renewable energy output, the platform helps utilities balance supply and demand more effectively, decreasing reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaker plants and supporting broader decarbonization goals.

The Earth-2 family of open AI models includes CorrDiff, FourCastNet3, Medium Range, Nowcasting, Global Data Assimilation, and the PhysicsNeMo framework—a suite designed for training and fine-tuning AI-physics models. These tools are part of the NVIDIA CUDA-X™ microservices and are accessible via NVIDIA DGX Cloud™, allowing researchers, developers, and enterprises to build customized climate simulations without requiring extensive in-house infrastructure.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the urgency of deploying such technology in the face of escalating climate impacts. “Climate disasters are now normal — historic droughts, catastrophic hurricanes and generational floods appear in the news with alarming frequency,” he stated. “Earth-2 cloud APIs strive to help us better prepare for — and inspire us to act to moderate — extreme weather.”

By positioning Earth-2 as an open, production-ready platform, NVIDIA aims to democratize access to advanced climate modeling tools. The technology supports scientific visualization, physical AI development, and tensor-optimized inference through TensorRT, aligning with broader company initiatives in areas such as Isaac for robotics and Inception for AI startups.

As climate-related economic losses continue to rise—exceeding $140 billion annually according to NVIDIA’s estimates—the company views AI-driven simulation not only as a technological advancement but as a critical component of global adaptation and mitigation strategies. Earth-2 represents a step toward integrating AI into environmental stewardship at a scale and speed previously unattainable through conventional methods.
