YANGON, Myanmar – A major earthquake in Myanmar has resulted in a rising death toll, with the latest figures indicating more than​ 1,600 fatalities, according to the ruling junta. The magnitude 7.7 earthquake, which struck on Friday, March 28, was also felt in⁤ neighboring⁤ countries, including China and Thailand.

The assessment of the earthquake’s impact continues, with the junta reporting on Saturday, March⁣ 29, that at least 1,644 people have died and 3,408 were injured.The U.S. Geological⁤ Survey ⁢(USGS) also⁣ reported the earthquake.

The earthquake⁤ struck the center of the country around 12:50 p.m. local time. The USGS‍ reported the ⁢epicenter was 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Important damage has been reported in Naypyidaw,the capital,with roads distorted by the tremors.

In response to the disaster, the Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency in six ⁣regions and appealed for international assistance. While authorities have‌ not yet released comprehensive figures ​on casualties and material damage, initial reports indicate a significant impact. One report stated that the injured were overwhelming emergency services, Hundreds of injured people arrive… but the emergency building⁢ has also collapsed.

The European Union has offered assistance to the affected countries. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the ⁢European⁤ commission, stated that European satellites Copernicus already help.
