Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands - Residents across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced tremors today as a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the region. The earthquake’s epicentre was located 538 kilometres south of Port Blair, according to initial reports. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or meaningful damage.
No Tsunami Threat Issued
in a crucial update for coastal communities, the Indian Tsunami Early Warning System has confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami following today’s earthquake. the system stated, “Based on pre-run model scenarios, there is NO THREAT to countries in the Indian Ocean. No further bulletins will be issued unless the situation changes.” The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) also issued a notice indicating no further bulletins would be released for this event unless new information becomes available.
Global Agencies Report on seismic Activity
Global seismic monitoring agencies have also provided details on the earthquake. the United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake struck 259 kilometers west-northwest of Sabang, in Indonesia’s western Aceh province. This region holds a poignant history, having been the area moast devastated by the catastrophic magnitude-9.1 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2004, which claimed over 220,000 lives across 15 countries.
Separately, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 striking India’s Nicobar Islands.
Delhi Prepares with Mega Disaster Management Mock Drill
In a proactive measure to enhance preparedness for seismic events, the National Capital Region (NCR) is set to conduct a first-ever “mega-scale” disaster management mock exercise on August 1. This complete drill, named “Suraksha Chakra,” will involve multiple emergency response agencies working in tandem to simulate responses to earthquake, industrial, and chemical hazard scenarios.
The exercise is preceded by a symposium of stakeholder agencies scheduled for July 29, followed by table-top exercises (TTEx) on july 30 at the Manekshaw Center in Delhi. This integrated disaster management exercise is a significant step in the Centre’s “whole-of-government” approach, aiming to bolster safety and resilience in the Delhi-NCR region. NDMA Member Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) emphasized the collaborative nature of the drills, stating, “The mega-scale drills are part of the Centre’s whole-of-government approach where multiple stakeholders will work together to make this region a safer place.”
