The Earth is absorbing significantly more solar radiation than in previous decades, according to a 2026 study published in Nature Climate Science, with researchers attributing the trend to a decline in global dimming—a phenomenon caused by atmospheric pollutants that once reflected sunlight away from the planet. This shift, they say, is accelerating warming and complicating climate models.

The study, conducted by a team from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), analyzed satellite data from 2005 to 2025 and found that the planet’s albedo—the measure of how much sunlight is reflected—has decreased by 1.2% over two decades. This means more solar energy is being absorbed by the Earth’s surface and atmosphere, contributing to rising global temperatures.

“Global dimming has been a key factor in masking some of the effects of climate change,” said Dr. Lena Müller, a climatologist at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and a co-author of the study. “As air quality regulations have reduced particulate pollution, the cooling effect of these aerosols has diminished, allowing more sunlight to reach the surface. This is now amplifying the warming caused by greenhouse gases.”

The findings align with earlier research from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which noted in its 2021 report that the reduction of sulfate aerosols—a major component of global dimming—has contributed to a 0.5°C increase in global temperatures since the 1980s. However, the 2026 study provides more precise data, linking the trend to specific policy changes.

“Many countries implemented stricter emissions controls in the 2010s, particularly in Europe and East Asia,” said Dr. Miguel Torres, an environmental economist at the University of Cambridge. “These policies reduced particulate matter in the atmosphere, which had a dual effect: improving public health and accelerating climate change. It’s a paradox that highlights the complexity of balancing environmental goals.”

The study also raises questions about the reliability of current climate projections. Models that assume a stable albedo may underestimate warming in the coming decades, according to the researchers. “If the trend continues, we could see temperature increases that exceed even the most pessimistic scenarios,” said Dr. Müller.

Business sectors are already taking notice. Energy companies are recalibrating their renewable investment strategies, while insurance firms are revising risk assessments for extreme weather events. In Europe, the European Commission has announced plans to accelerate the deployment of solar energy infrastructure, citing the study as a key factor in its decision.

“Solar power is becoming more viable as a direct result of this trend,” said Anna Bergman, a spokesperson for the European Renewable Energy Council. “With more sunlight available, the efficiency of photovoltaic systems is improving, which could drive down costs and increase adoption.”

However, the study also warns of potential unintended consequences. The reduction in global dimming could lead to more intense heatwaves, altered precipitation patterns, and increased ocean acidification. “We’re essentially removing a brake on warming,” said Dr. Torres. “This means we need to act faster to reduce emissions and adapt to the changes already in motion.”

The research underscores the interconnectedness of environmental policies and climate outcomes. While reducing air pollution has clear health benefits, the study suggests that such efforts must be paired with aggressive measures to cut carbon emissions. “There’s no single solution,” said Dr. Müller. “We need a holistic approach that addresses both the immediate and long-term drivers of climate change.”

As governments and industries grapple with these findings, the 2026 study serves as a stark reminder of the dynamic nature of the climate system. For businesses, the message is clear: the energy transition must be both rapid and resilient to account for these evolving conditions.
