Humberside police have launched an examination into deaths following heart surgery at Castle Hill Hospital near Hull, East Yorkshire. The inquiry centers on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures, a less invasive option to open-heart surgery, performed on elderly and frail patients. This heart surgery deaths investigation is in itS early stages, and no arrests have been made, according to police.
The TAVI procedure replaces a damaged heart valve by inserting an instrument with a balloon into an artery, typically in the leg or chest. The balloon is inflated to create space for the new valve. While less invasive than bypass surgery, TAVI still carries risks.
Concerns arose after a review highlighted the deaths of 11 patients who underwent the procedure. The Humber Health Care Partnership, which oversees Castle Hill thru Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH), stated that three separate reviews found mortality rates after TAVI surgery at the hospital were consistent with national averages. The trust added that families of deceased patients were invited to ask questions.
A spokesperson for the Humber Health Care Partnership said, ”Three separate external reviews of our TAVI service have been undertaken and shown that mortality rates associated with TAVI are similar to national mortality rates over a four-year period.”
The Royal College of Physicians reviewed the service in 2021 at the request of the trust’s chief medical officer. The Royal College report concluded that the TAVI service is essential for the Humber and North Yorkshire region and needs to be expanded. The report offered a number of actions for improvement and we have delivered against all of those since it was shared with us.”
