GJENDEBU, Norway – The Gjendebu tourist lodge in Jotunheimen, a popular destination for Easter tourists as 1871, has announced an unexpected closure for the upcoming holiday due to hazardous ice conditions on Lake Gjende.

Øystein Garden, who manages the historic lodge, emphasized the tough decision to close. “We simply had to make a choice and close at Easter,” Garden stated. “If someone was to venture onto the water and something were to happen, it would have been absolutely terrible.”
Located 984 meters above sea level, Gjendebu is the oldest tourist cabin still operated by the Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT). The proximity to Lake Gjende is a major draw, but this year, the ice poses too great a risk.
“The ice appears safe and inviting, but it is not,” Garden explained. “We are not taking any chances.”
Mild Weather to Blame
Gjendebu’s location on the weather divide between eastern and western Norway has made it particularly vulnerable to the recent mild weather. The area has seen a lack of snow, and the ice on the lake is considered unstable.
Garden noted that similar conditions may have occurred in the past. “I know there were difficult years in 2011 and 2012, but the lodge remained open then. I’ve been considering this possibility throughout the winter, so it wasn’t a complete shock, although it is disappointing,” he said.
The closure has impacted between 400 and 500 pre-booked easter tourists, who have been informed of the need to adjust their plans.
DNT Suggests Alternatives
Despite the closure, the DNT is encouraging tourists to explore other mountain destinations with better snow conditions. Margrete Bjørge Katanasho, a communications advisor for DNT, highlighted several options.
“It is indeed still possible to have a white Easter; you just need to know where to go,” Katanasho said. “there are favorable conditions at Fondsbu and Glitterheim, west of Jotunheimen, and ample snow in the central hardangervidda region, from Finse towards Geitøgghytta and Hallingskeid. The areas around Nørdstedalseter in Breheimen and Sylan are also appealing.”
Katanasho added, “As Easter is late this year, visitors can enjoy long, bright days, hopefully with excellent April weather.”
Other Lodges Report Good Conditions
Solbjørg Kvålshaugen, host at Fondsbu in Jotunheimen, reported favorable spring skiing conditions. “There is sufficient snow for cabin trips, tours, and summit expeditions, both with randonnée skiing and mountain skiing,” Kvålshaugen said.”We are busy, but we still have some available beds. and as always, where there is room in our hearts, there is room for everyone. All who arrive will receive food and a place to sleep.”
Terje Sølna from Leirvassbu in Jotunheimen also reported adequate snow and a full cabin. “We are blessed here at Leirvassbu to have good snow and decent conditions,” Sølna said.”There is some wind-affected snow in the area, making it slightly challenging, but manny are still finding pleasant areas with powder and slush during the day.”
